¿Hablas Español?

Did I mention already that there is a large cage of pigeons in my house? Well, not in my house exactly...there is a garden in the center of the house and there are pigeons in the garden. The first morning, I awoke to strange cooing sounds. It took me a while to figure out what they were!

We started classes yesterday. You know how I was saying that the language was not as difficult to understand as I thought? Well, I take it back. Classes were so overwhelming! The ten of us sat there pretty clueless. They just speak so fast--and some with strong accents that we're not used to. It was frustrating, but I know it will get better!

Yesterday a group of us students took a combi for the first time without any "adults." And we survived! My host mother was so concerned for our safety, but I assured her that it was just fine. We also bought cell phones together yesterday. We needed a cheap way to be in touch with each other to make plans. Our phones cost about 25 US dollars...not too bad!

Alonso, one of my host brothers, has been a blessing these past few days. He's 22 and lives here in the house. He speaks English fairly well--a little better than I speak Spanish. It's fun to just talk and learn more about our languages and cultures. I've been grateful to have someone my age around to talk with and feel comfortable with.

The weather here is so consistent. Always sunny. Always warm. I can't complain! We don't have classes on Fridays, so I think today will be a beach day! : )

  1. Wow beth, you seem to be having a great time! I am über jealous! all the pictures you posted are soo beautiful. I hope that things continue going well for you. A helpful hint, I saw in the beginning you said you were speaking spanglish with your host mom, and you also said your host brother spoke pretty decent english, i know its tough, but dont do it! Not speaking any english is the best way to learn the language as fast as possible (especially in a 4 month period, which seems long, but it really isnt long at all). even if it takes 5 mins to explain something lol. Well i hope you have a great experience, i'm sure you will. Love you, god bless!
